Contemporary Plastic Injection Molding Process
29/01/2012 21:08Plastic Injection Molding as you will see is a process that is used in wide range of industries today. It is quite mandatory for the engineers to understand this process so that they can work in a better approach. The main characteristics of the machine that is used in the process are:
- The machine makes use of plunger which is screw-type in order to push melted plastic material towards the mold cavity.
- The machine produces the desired shapes, or the ones that fit perfectly in the mold contours.
- The machine makes use of thermoplastic or the thermoset materials only.
- The machine produces gate marks, parting lines or sprue.
- The machine usually has the ejector pin mark.
The process of Plastic Injection Molding
Even though it is considered that the process of standard injection molding is pretty simple, but it still needs to be done perfectly, primarily to avoid wastage of raw material and time as well. In the contemporary process, there is a use of machines which are controlled by microprocessor and this ensures that the entire process is completely automatic.
First of all, the polymeric material is transferred into heated barrel from feed hopper in the granule or powdered form. This thermoplastic material is then melted in the barrel, which is later injected into mold with the help of plunger arrangement. The mold is them clamped shut with a lot of pressure at a designated temperature. This thermoplastic material then solidifies into desired shape in the mold and is ejected after being cooled at a certain temperature.
